How Much Do Mechanical Engineers Earn?

Mechanical engineering is a much-coveted profession. Apart from the several other benefits, the mechanical engineering salary, which is higher than most salaries that bachelor degree holders get, is one of the major draws into this line of career. But, before understanding how good the salary is, let us take a look into what the profession is all about.

What's a Mechanical Engineer Supposed to Do?

A mechanical engineering degree qualifies you to design machines. Almost any kind of machine in the world-from the humblest of thumbtacks to the most imposing of battle tanks-were designed by mechanical engineers. To become a mechanical engineer, you need to have loads of creative imagination. You have to think ahead of others and visualize plans. If someone has a concept, you are the one who will have to put it into a concrete form.

Being a mechanical engineer, you won't be just thinking about basic structure and design, but you will also be thinking about the functionality of the whole thing. Let us consider a successful design-the cell phone. The buttons of any cell phone are quite strategically placed. These were placed by a group of mechanical engineers. They visualized what would be the easiest approach to dial on a number pad and then conceptualized it in such a manner that they worked.

So, the profession is quite a challenging one. You will be constantly inundated with concepts which you will be expected to materialize. And, since we live in a competitive world, you will be expected to improve upon existing products as well.

What Is the Usual Mechanical Engineering Salary?

A mechanical engineering salary depends on a host of factors.

- Your experience in the field, including your academic qualifications and other related work such as research and even any voluntary work or recommendations,

- Your previous resume,

- The school you have qualified from,

- The organization you are employed with,

- The nature of the work you are assigned and so on.

Hence, one cannot say for definite how much someone's salary would typically be. However, there are some points that can be made, considering the present scenario.

- Someone who is starting out with the career, i.e. is just out of college, can stand to get close to $40,000 annually. This is higher than what an arts graduate or even a commerce graduate can get. These professionals might get close to $35,000 on an annual basis.

- The median mechanical engineering salary in the US in 2002 was $65,000. This included professionals at all levels of the profession.

- The people in the topmost levels of the mechanical engineering profession earn much higher. The top 10% of the people in this line of career can earn as close to $90,000. This makes mechanical engineering one of the most lucrative forms of engineering in the world today.

The salary most certainly makes this a profession worth considering. However, you must know that like any other branch of engineering, you need to have an aptitude and talent for it. You also need to understand there will be various challenges posed in front of you and you need to prove your mettle with them. At the same time, there's the satisfying point that you are being compensated for your job quite well and you are getting a tremendous amount of creative satisfaction when you see your plans being put to reality.

The Critical Role Played By Mechanical Engineering

Even if you are not scientifically and mathematically inclined, you know there are some underlying fundamentals in our world. Mechanical engineering is one of them.

Let's step back in time, for a moment, to Ancient Greece. A man by the name of Archimedes (287 BC - 212 BC) along with a many by the name of Heron of Alexandria (10-70 AD) are largely responsible for Western mechanics - though they had no way of knowing this at the time. Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer ... in short, he more than left his mark on the story of mechanical engineering. Likewise, Heron of Alexandria was also a mathematician and engineer - and without him, Alexandria would not have been the place that it was.

Both Archimedes and Heron of Alexandria made fantastic discoveries that are still studied in various courses throughout the Western world today. Additionally, the medieval Chinese horologist Su Song (1020-1101 AD) also helped to shape the world of mechanics through a unique escapement function that helped his astronomical clock tower to function quite astonishingly. However, it was not until around the beginning of the 19th Century that this discipline was made into the separate field of study that we know today.

The very first British professional society of civil engineers was not developed until 1818. Once Britain has established their own society, the United States followed during the year 1880. The story of mechanical engineering within the United States begins with the United States Military Academy (the first school to offer this field of study), and the trade is still quite popular across the U.S. today.

Thousands of applicants apply to study this type of trade every year. Most colleges and universities offer some form of engineering department, though there are some schools that are much more recognized than others. To become a person that is highly thought of within this field, one must remain in school for many years, and master a slew of tough courses.

The story of mechanical engineering began in Ancient Greece, though no end is currently in sight. In fact, the world would probably not be able to function without the people that spend hours studying this discipline, which makes these experts some of the most important people in the world. If you ever look at a particularly intricate machine and wonder how it's made, think about the person that made it ... more often than not, it is probably the work of a highly trained specialist.

Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design and Drawing Services at Lowest Rates

Mechanical Engineering involves the Physical usage for mechanism and functioning, design, manufacturing, installation, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems such as boilers, condensers, heat engines, air conditioners & refrigerators, machine tools, thermal power stations etc.

Kinematics, dynamics, static, Energy conversion, Mechanics, Manufacturing and production, refrigeration and air conditioning are the foundation subjects of mechanical engineering. It also Engage its attention with other Engineering disciplines like Electrical engineering in electronics, Aeronautical Engineering in Fluid Mechanics, Civil Engineering in stress & Strain analysis, Computer Engineering in hardware manufacturing etc.

Accomplishing mechanical projects has always posed serious problems for companies, whether they need computer aided design such as electrical engineering, new industrial product design, or civil engineering of a new building.

Many people are familiar with online project marketplaces that connect businesses and individuals in need of services with skilled professionals to perform the work. Companies have long struggled with the engineering required to launch new products and build customized facilities. When you discuss the actual mechanical design of your next key product, or the structural engineering of a multi million dollar building, things cannot be left to chance and "close" is never close enough. Businesses need complete control over their projects, even if they are being outsourced. Mechanical engineers use the core principles as well as other knowledge in the field to design.

A Mechanical Engineer will:

~ Know how energy gets converted to useful power (thermodynamics).
~ Examine the wear and tear of machines and systems.
~ Prepare configurations and drawings of machines or machine parts.
~ Examine strength of material for a particular application.
~ Design advanced materials (machine design).
