Difference Between Architects and Civil Engineers
Whenever you think of giving a physical realization to the idea of a house or building in your mind, you know you need some kind of professional help. The professionals most concerned with construction work are either a civil engineer or architects. Although both professionals work towards one goal, there is a fine line between the natures of both jobs. Civil engineering is a very vast area of engineering and further expands into many other branches which include structural engineering, environmental engineering, water resource engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering and many more. All of these engineers play a very important part in different phases of construction. For example, a geotechnical engineer is required to analyze the ground properties, soil and rock to determine and evaluate the stability of the project. They are also the ones who evaluate the chances and effect of earthquakes on a particular site.
Architects, however, are more concerned over the design and aesthetics of the structure. Although they require a good technical and mechanical knowledge of building and structures as well, their prime focus is the visual appearance and the feel of the structure. Ever wonder how we differentiate an ancient Egyptian temple from a Chinese temple just by looking at them. The pillars, walls and roofs of both structures serve the same purpose but it is the difference of architecture that sets them apart. The architects also need to be well aware of the functionality and practicality of the design. They need to know that the purpose intended to be served by the structure they are designing. They design everything accordingly. The solution they have to come up with has to be practical, functional as well as aesthetically appealing.
Civil engineers use the drafts made by the architects and analyze the most economical and sometimes innovative way to give it a physical existence. They handle more technical details of the project rather than just the design. There prime focus is the construction of the design in such a way that it can bear the maximum weight and force without collapsing. Aesthetics and functionality is not generally their area of concern as it has to be already defined in the architectural designs.
Although architects are the one who initiate the process of construction through their design. They need to work closely with the engineers to give them a clear idea of their vision. Generally, there is only one architect required on a single project but the number of engineers can vary greatly. As mentioned earlier, there are several different types of civil engineers involved in every step of the construction. The number and type of engineers working on a project also change with the type of project. The project can be a building, a bridge, a stadium, roads, dams or a tunnel.
Although both the civil engineers and architects have their own set of responsibilities and abilities, a good mutual understanding and effort is very important for a successful project. For people who are confused about choosing from the two as their field of study should analyze their natural inclinations towards creative works or more technical aspects.

How Much Do Mechanical Engineers Earn?
Mechanical engineering is a much-coveted profession. Apart from the several other benefits, the mechanical engineering salary, which is higher than most salaries that bachelor degree holders get, is one of the major draws into this line of career. But, before understanding how good the salary is, let us take a look into what the profession is all about.
What's a Mechanical Engineer Supposed to Do?
A mechanical engineering degree qualifies you to design machines. Almost any kind of machine in the world-from the humblest of thumbtacks to the most imposing of battle tanks-were designed by mechanical engineers. To become a mechanical engineer, you need to have loads of creative imagination. You have to think ahead of others and visualize plans. If someone has a concept, you are the one who will have to put it into a concrete form.
Being a mechanical engineer, you won't be just thinking about basic structure and design, but you will also be thinking about the functionality of the whole thing. Let us consider a successful design-the cell phone. The buttons of any cell phone are quite strategically placed. These were placed by a group of mechanical engineers. They visualized what would be the easiest approach to dial on a number pad and then conceptualized it in such a manner that they worked.
So, the profession is quite a challenging one. You will be constantly inundated with concepts which you will be expected to materialize. And, since we live in a competitive world, you will be expected to improve upon existing products as well.
What Is the Usual Mechanical Engineering Salary?
A mechanical engineering salary depends on a host of factors.
- Your experience in the field, including your academic qualifications and other related work such as research and even any voluntary work or recommendations,
- Your previous resume,
- The school you have qualified from,
- The organization you are employed with,
- The nature of the work you are assigned and so on.
Hence, one cannot say for definite how much someone's salary would typically be. However, there are some points that can be made, considering the present scenario.
- Someone who is starting out with the career, i.e. is just out of college, can stand to get close to $40,000 annually. This is higher than what an arts graduate or even a commerce graduate can get. These professionals might get close to $35,000 on an annual basis.
- The median mechanical engineering salary in the US in 2002 was $65,000. This included professionals at all levels of the profession.
- The people in the topmost levels of the mechanical engineering profession earn much higher. The top 10% of the people in this line of career can earn as close to $90,000. This makes mechanical engineering one of the most lucrative forms of engineering in the world today.
The salary most certainly makes this a profession worth considering. However, you must know that like any other branch of engineering, you need to have an aptitude and talent for it. You also need to understand there will be various challenges posed in front of you and you need to prove your mettle with them. At the same time, there's the satisfying point that you are being compensated for your job quite well and you are getting a tremendous amount of creative satisfaction when you see your plans being put to reality.

Famous British Engineers
As explained in the previous articles, it can be very useful to know about a few famous engineers and their impact on society. It shows that you are dedicated to the industry and have a passion to learn. If you are considering a job as an engineer then read on for some helpful information.
Thomas Telford
Telford was a Scottish Engineer who built roads, bridges and canals. He specialised in civil engineering and designed many large and important structures. For example, he built the suspension bridge at Comway docks.
Thomas Telford was born in 1757 and he died in 1834. He did a bit of work in Scotland and then later moved to London and started building some of his greatest creations. Later on in his career he built the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal and Whitstable Harbour in Kent.
George Stephenson
Stephenson was best known for his interest and talent for designing railways. He was an English Mechanical Engineer who was born in 1781 and died in 1848. One of his best attributes was determination and the drive to develop more efficient engineering creations.
Stephenson started off his career at a young age when he became an engineman in Newburn. After years of training and experience he became an expert in steam machinery. He actually designed a six wheeled machine for a railway in 1817.
Another of his most interesting creations was the Skew Arch bridge which was official opened in 1830. It was the first of its kind because it was built so that it could cross a railway at an angle. The reasons for building a bridge like this is are because it allows the pedestrian platform to be extended on one side; it looks fascinating and provides good strength in certain areas.
James Dyson
You may recognise this name because of the popular hoover or vacuum cleaner. James Dyson was born in Norfolk in 1947 and he invented the first vacuum cleaner that did not need a bag. Dyson's have now become very high tech and are very high powered products. Dyson also invented the Dual Cyclone vacuum which prevents a loss of suction. This product has made him a huge amount of money and established him as a fine English industrial designer.
